Single Ply Membranes

Thermoplastic Polyolefin, or TPO, is part of a diverse family of rubber-like materials based on polypropylene and EP rubber polymerized together using a state-of-the-art manufacturing technology. Unlike other popular thermoplastic roofing membranes (PVC), TPO does not contain chlorine or plasticizers. Without chlorine being added, it can be classified as an environmentally safe “green” product. It is also 100% recyclable. In addition, the lack of plasticizers enables sheets to wear longer and not harden or become brittle over time. Flame retardants, light stabilizers, antioxidants, light absorbers and pigments are blended to create a sheet that is “Title 24” compliant. The white TPO roofing membrane typically has a reflectivity rating in the high 80% range when installed, and after 3 years still maintains a rating in the low 80% range.

In commercial roofing applications, the TPO membrane is installed using mechanical fasteners and plates placed along the leading edge with the next sheet lapped and then hot air-welded together. Hot air robots make larger jobs very quick with welds that are consistent. One of the major benefits of TPO is that the welded seams actually become stronger than the sheets themselves, making for an ultra-strong roof. TPO is suitable either as an overlay or for use in a complete tear-off. Sheet thicknesses range from 45 mils to 80 mils, with the 60-mil sheet the most popular. Because TPO roofing material is manufactured in wide sheets, labor requirements are reduced, especially on larger roof installations, which can result in significant cost savings, making TPO an economical choice.

Completely odorless, TPO is good choice for situations where fumes would be a problem and roofs that have limited access. Manufacturer material and labor warranties for TPO roofing range from 10 to 20 years.

EPDM rubber roofing

The ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) creates a single layer rubberized roof that is long lasting and UV resistant. EPDM roofing systems do not require a mineral coating, which makes them much lighter than tar and gravel roofs. It should be noted that a rigid insulation is recommended for this type of roof.

PVC membrane is a roof membrane composed of only one layer of material, polyvinyl chloride. PVC roofs are specially designed to withstand ponding water- PVC membrane is welded together with hot air (no open flame) to eliminate all seams so moisture can not pass through. PVC roofing systems also reflect nearly 90% of the heat of the sun, thus lowering energy costs substantially, especially in high-heat areas such as the southwestern United States.

Built Up

Built up roofs are used when the pitch is no more than 3 inches rise to 12 inches run. This roof is installed by alternating layers of heavy roofing felt and hot asphalt or tar. The final product is coated with a mineral such as gravel. Built-up roofs are rated by how many layers are applied, usually between 3 and 5 layers are considered standard.

  • Good weather resistance

Cons:

  • Can be messy to install
  • Not intended for high rain or snow areas

Slope (or pitch) measures the amount of rise your roof has compared to the length. In other words, for every twelve inches of length your roof will rise a set number of inches. The diagram below illustrates a roof that has a seven inch rise for every 12 inches of length thus it has a 7 inch slope or pitch. (also expressed 7 in 12)

Measuring Slope

An easy way to measure slope is to take level and mark where 12 inches is. (assuming it is longer than one foot) Place the level with one end on the roof and raise the other end until it is level. Next take a tape measure and determine the number of inches between the roof and the spot you have marked on your level. You now have the amount of slope for your roof.

Simplified Slope

  1. Flat Roof – Flat or with just the slightest amount of a
    pitch to them.
  2. Low Slope Roof – Usually around a 2-3 in pitch roof that is easily walkable with normal footing.
  3. Medium Slope Roof – Considered 4-6 in pitch roof, it is walkable with normal footing.
  4. Steep Slope Roof – Any pitch above 6 in, this is a roof that is not walkable without assistance.
